What Does the Qualification Cover?

The course is built around five interconnected skills areas, reflecting the national standards for essential digital skills:

• Using Devices and Handling Information — You'll learn to use different types of devices and applications, apply system settings, carry out effective internet searches using keywords and filters, organise files in folders, and troubleshoot common technical problems.

• Creating and Editing — You'll use word-processing, presentation and other software to enter, edit, format and lay out text, tables, graphics and charts for different audiences and purposes, and learn to edit images using an appropriate tool.

• Communicating — You'll use email and online messaging confidently for a range of contexts and audiences, and understand how to manage and limit your digital footprint.

• Transacting — You'll manage online account settings, complete online forms and uploads, and carry out checks to reduce the risks involved in online transactions.

• Being Safe and Responsible Online — You'll understand your rights under data protection law, know how to protect your personal information and privacy online, back up files to the cloud, avoid malware, and minimise the health risks associated with device use.

Level 1 builds on and extends the Entry Level 3 content, introducing more complex, multi-stage tasks that reflect real workplace and everyday-life scenarios.

Assessment

All assessments are taken online. Assessments are marked by NOCN.

This qualification's assessment is made up of two parts. Part One is a scenario-based task that requires internet access, and for some Level 1 assessments, learners will also need a secondary device with a working camera and microphone (such as a mobile phone or tablet) to capture photos or record audio/video as evidence.

Part Two is a multiple choice assessment, which is completed without internet research or the use of a secondary device. As a guide, the notional pass mark for Level 1 is approximately 28 out of 46. Once the completed assessment has been submitted, NOCN usually issues results within 10 working days.

Delivery

This course is delivered through live, tutor-led sessions, available either online or in the classroom, combined with practical, hands-on digital activities, helping you build real confidence with devices, applications, and the internet. You'll have the opportunity to try sample and familiarisation assessments before sitting your live assessment, so you know exactly what to expect on assessment day. All assessments are completed on NOCN's online e-Assessment platform under exam conditions.
