Assessment is an ongoing process aimed at understanding and improving student learning. It involves making the college expectations explicit and public; setting appropriate criteria and high standards for learning quality; systematically gathering, analyzing, and interpreting evidence to determine how well performance matches those expectations and standards; and using the resulting information to document, explain, and improve performance.
Assessment at Notting Hill College is embedded effectively within the whole college system in a way that help us focus our collective attention, examine our assumptions, and create a shared academic culture dedicated to assuring and improving the quality of our lifelong education.
Students' assessments at Notting Hill College take place in multiple modes to provide meaningful feedback on learning outcomes. These multiple modes help us meet the different learning styles of the students.
Tests, exams, and performance assessment tasks are used to show that students have mastered learning outcomes toward a degree or certification program or toward a personal learning goal, thus providing evidence of substantive change in individual learners.
Quizzes and hands-on learning activities are used to provide meaningful feedback to students during learning events so that students understand their learning gaps and can take responsibility for continued study and work to master the learning outcomes.
Quizzes and opinion polls are used in collaborative learning settings to poll the learners on their opinions or understanding of a topic. Poll responses are used to generate interactive discussions between learners. Peer-to-peer assessments are used in collaborative learning activities to assess participation. Class quizzes are used to determine student understanding of a learning objective.
Assessments are documented through portfolios for learners to be used as evidence of learning, as well as to document learning outcomes for potential employers.
